Local 188 is a combination local: Pipefitting, Plumbing, HVAC and Welding.  Our Apprentices must complete a 5 year program which consists of 1230 hours of instructional training and 8,500 to 10,000 hours of on the job training before they can complete our program and be certified as a Journeymen.  Our Apprentices are OSHA certified and are required to pass an annual drug screen.  We are also associated with the University of Michigan, Helmets to Hard Hats, Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and the Chamber of Commerce.

Our instructors attend Washtenaw College in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a one week instructor training program.  An associates' degree is given after attending for 5 years.  They also attend additional instructional courses throughout the year to keep them abreast of new developments and update their certifications.

The Apprentice Program currently offers the following courses:

  • OSHA, Union Heritage and Tool Safety
  • HVAC and Basic Electricity
  • Blue Print Reading and ISO Drawing
  • Basic Math and Advanced Math
  • Plumbing
  • Layout
  • Beginner Welding
  • Intermediate Welding
  • Advanced Welding: To be certified as a Journeyman welder they must have UA Certs: Tig and Stick
  • Rigging, (EPRI) Electrical Power Research Institute
  • Accelerated Welding Program
  • Medical Gas Training
  • Foreman Certification
  • Steward Training
  • Backflow Certification
  • Tube Bending 

Apprenticeship Applications:
The school year begins every September and the dead line for applying for the Apprenticeship Program is July 1st of each year.

Requirements: Must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or GED, transcript of your grades either high school or GED, a valid driver’s license (Identification Cards will not be accepted), birth certificate, social security card, $25.00 application fee, a Passing Grade from the TABE Test and if applicable a copy of your DD214.

You must have all of the above requirements with you in order to fill out an application.

Interview Process
All applications received by July 1st of each year will be sent a letter to come to an interview session that will be held at the Union Hall at the end of July or by the middle of August.  Each Applicant will be sent a letter by mail if they are accepted or not into the program.

 Apprentices attend school 2 nights per week from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm and will go to work with a signatory contractor when work is available.Type your paragraph here.
